Plus making your own dog treats is such a great way to make your furry friend feel loved and special!

Healthy Ingredients

Oat Flouris the base of this homemade dog treat recipe. You can buy oat flour from the grocery store, but I like to make my own using old-fashioned oats. The easiest way to make oat flour is to add oats to a blender or food processor and pulse until you get a flour-type consistency. For this easy recipe, it’s not needed to get the finest flour, and perfectly fine to have larger pieces.

Natural Peanut Butteris perfect to help combine all the ingredients and contain healthy fats that dogs need. We are using a small amount in these dog cookies, but it’s most dog’s favorite part of this treat and adds so much flavor. You can also substitute with other nut butters such as almond butter or cashew butter if you have those on hand.

Coconut Oilhelps to add some moisture and fat to the recipe. But it also makes this treat get a little soft at room temperature, so it’s best to keep them in the refrigerator. It also is great in small amounts for digestion, brain and mental function, and helps with weight loss.

Blueberriesare the only ingredient that contains antioxidants, which are great for people and dogs. They also are a great source of fiber, vitamin C, and vitamin K, all of which your pet needs. Plus they make these healthy dog treats extra tasty!

Ground Flaxseeds or Ground Pumpkin Seeds (Optional)are a great addition to add some extra nutrition to your dog’s diet. Ground flaxseed has fiber and is a great source of protein. They are known for helping with your dog’s digestive system while providing energy and a stronger immune system. Ground pumpkin seeds are great for digestive and bladder health, great for their skin and coat, plus they also act as a natural de-wormer for parasites.

Both flaxseed and pumpkin seeds should be given in small quantities and without any added salt.

It’s a good idea to review the ingredient list and get out all the ingredients and supplies first. Then the recipe will go smoothly and your furry best friend can enjoy these homemade treats! And if your dog is anything like mine, they will be right next to you in the kitchen waiting to see what you are making for them.

Step one: If making your own oat flour, then add 1 cup of old-fashioned oats to your blender or food processor. Pulse several times to get the mixture started. Then you can blend for 10-20 seconds until you get the texture you like. There is no need to get fine flour, as a little texture is really nice in the dough. You can also use quick oats and leave them whole, which will result in a more textured treat. If you have pumpkin seeds that aren’t ground, then you can follow the same process for them.

Step two: Pour oat flour, 1/2 cup of creamy peanut butter, 1 tablespoon of coconut oil, and 2 tablespoons of ground flaxseed or ground pumpkin seed (optional) into a medium bowl. Stir until a dough forms. It should not be wet or dry. If you have a wet or very sticky dough, then you will want to add some more oat flour. If your dough is dry, then add a little more peanut butter.

Step three: Add 1/4 cup of fresh blueberries to really take these diy dog treats to another level. You can either smush the blueberries while mixing them in or cut them in half, making them easier for your dog to eat and spreading them throughout the dough. Plus they add a small bit of sweetness for your dog. Mix to combine.

Step four: Roll these tasty treats into small balls, making them size-appropriate for your dog. Place the small bites on a small cookie sheet leaving a little room between each one. Once they are all rolled out, place the baking sheet into the refrigerator for 1-2 hours to set. Of course, you can give them to your dog right away, I know mine couldn’t wait any longer!

Storing your Homemade No Bake Dog Treats

It’s best to store your dog’s new favorite treats in an airtight container and place them in the refrigerator for long-lasting freshness. They should last at least 2 weeks if you store them in the fridge.

The best part is that you can also freeze these no-bake treats if your dog can’t eat them all! I have had success freezing them in freezer-safe plastic bag or glass container for up to 2 months without any issues. When ready to use the treats again, just take them out of the freezer, place them in the fridge, and let them thaw out overnight.
